Reasons Behind a Pharmaceutical Disposal Program
- To reduce amount of drugs coming into wastewater treatment plants
- To reduce use of outdated meds and cases of accidental poisonings of the elderly
- To reduce teen prescription abuse
- To reduce amount of medications sent to landfill which will eventually leech into nearby waters
- An estimated 4 billion prescriptions are written each year; 40% of those drugs go unused
- There are only 294 collection sites in California by the end of 2010
