Governor Acts on Bills Sent to Him at End of Session

Governor Brown had until Sunday at midnight to sign or veto approximately 600 bills that were sent to him during the final weeks of the 2011 legislative session, and like Governor's before him, he had Capitol watchers in rapt anticipation heading up to the deadline. The Governor waited to take action on several high profile, controversial matters until Sunday afternoon and evening including mandating autism behavioral treatment coverage for insurance companies, prohibiting the “open carry” of handguns in public venues, banning the use of tanning beds for youth under the age of 18, and a measure strongly opposed by CASA, which limits retention proceeds on public works contracts to 5%.
