Definition of Terms - Z
- zero discharge
- (1) Complete recycling of water. (2) Discharge of essentially pure water. (3) Discharge of a treated effluent containing no substance at a concentration higher than that found normally in the local environment.
- zone of saturation
- The subsurface zone which extends downward from the base of the unsaturated zone, and in which the interstices are filled with water under pressure that is equal to or greater than atmospheric pressure.
- zooglea
- A jelly-like matrix developed by certain bacteria. A major part of activated sludge floc and of trickling filter slimes.
- zoogleal matrix
- The floc formed primarily by slime-producing bacteria in the activated sludge process or in biological beds.
- zooplankton
- Plankton that consists of animals, such as protozoans.
